The work involves the construction of a new hospital complex, on an area of 150,000 m2, to replace the old “Ospedali Riuniti” of the city of Salerno (a major urban hub near the Costiera Amalfitana).

The aim of the design is to provide a high-technology and future-proof university hospital to the city of Salerno and a main healthcare hub for the Region.

The area is close to the suburb of Fuorni and the industrial/commercial area of Salerno. The plot is surrounded by the Salerno-Reggio C. main train line on the south, the S. Leonardo Avenue on the north, the Fuorni creek on the east and the Fuorni neighborhood on the west. The area is mainly agricultural, but marred by some unfinished office development and low-level housing with no planning whatsoever.

The close cooperation between the professionals of the main design disciplines (urban planning, healthcare planning, MEP engineering, structural, roads, furnishings and equipment), coordinated by Studio Altieri, as the mandated Lead Designer, has made it possible to achieve important objectives, such as the full completion of all three design phases, construction permit and independent project auditing (required by law) within less than 34 months from contract signature.

This success is the result of both the acceleration of the authorization processes by Authorities having jurisdiction, and the proactive approach of the design team. In particular, the Design Team implemented a “zero-risk” strategy, where all design choices were shared with Client and Authorities well before the formal approval process began.

Within the time frame described, it was also possible to incorporate new needs imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
