The project stems from the need to manage sediment dredged from the port canals of Porto Marghera to keep a straight bottom compatible with the navigation. The lack of sediment storage areas compatible with the quality of these resulted in a critical condition with the determination of the emergency state (DPCM 03/12/04) “in relation to the socioeconomic-environmental crisis developing in the lagoon of Venice, in order to remove polluted sediments of the great sailing port canals.
The project interventions are of three types and are developed in about 5 years:
- realization of a new area by pumping sediments into an area of 50 ha. The basin infilling perimeter is made of metal sheet piling driven into waterproof layers; the sheet piling perimeter length is approximately 2,000 meters; for the structures perimeter realization and the wastewater is putting on a service dock. At the eastern edge of the basin infilling is made a “barena” (typical morphological land structure of the lagoon of Venice).
- dredging the canal to the depth of -11m for a total length of about 10 km and a volume of 2,300,000 m³ and disposing them into the basin;
- disposal management and dredging for further maintenance for more 700,000 m³.
