The project involves the upgrading and the compliance with the European standards of the existing Trieste WWTP, located in the port area. The whole area of the industrial port of Trieste is included in the overall actions for the remediation of the contaminated sites of national interest (SIN), for which the reclamation of the contaminated soils is required. Therefore, this project also includes the reclamation of the asbestos roofing and the remediation of the contaminated soils and groundwater.
About the WWTP, there are three treatment phases, all characterized by BAT (Best Available Technologies):
Primary treatment: screening, grit and oil removal, primary clarification;
Secondary treatment: biological reactor with biofiltration;
Tertiary treatment: disc-filters and UV-disinfection;
The project works in the existing WTP consist on demolition works, upgrading of the civil buildings and of the electromechanical equipment for the realization of the mechanical pre-treatment (screening and grit removal upstream the new biological plant).
The expansion works consist on the realization of the new biological treatment plant (pumping station, primary sedimentation, biofilters for pre-denitrification, biofilters for nitrification/oxidation, biofilters for post-denitrification and phosphorous removal, UV disinfection).
