The hospital is an important example of the Italian healthcare system thanks to technical and MEP choices and to the original architectonical layout, based on the  location of  departments and functional areas creating convenient  internal connections between departments. This layout guarantees a separation between services, wards and laboratories.
The hospital has a capacity of 795 beds and 42 technical beds.  It also includes general care services, connected to smaller buildings housing offices, nursing schools, personnel lodging and the morgue.
The three underground floors are equipped for general services, archives, a conference center, warehouse, a kitchen and a restaurant for internal personnel, the diagnostic and care structures.
The ground floor houses the Emergency department, diagnosis department, physiotherapy department, blood sample department, radiology as well as the main entrance hall.
The 1st floor houses the outpatient area, laboratories, offices and general services.
The 2nd floor houses the operating block (10 operating rooms), while the upper 9 floors are dedicated to wards.
The hospital is highly integrated with the urban context using the existing infrastructure network for an easy access to hospital services.
The architectonical layout and the structural choices made more than 30 years ago, still in use today are able to fulfil the flexibility needs in term of technology and changing healthcare techniques.
